2015 – Day 1

Let the Scots be a nation, o’ proud of their heritage
With an eye to the future, and a heart to forgive

Welcome to the first day of 2015. The first day of the rest of your life.

Today the video I have shared is not one of Christian lyrics. But it could be. Because the Corries song ‘Scotland Will Flourish’ is all about having the right character. It’s about demonstrating behaviour that is both welcoming and forgiving.

I want to share with you today about something that has become very important to me. ‘being Scottish.’ I say become very important to me because looking back on my life it hasn’t been. I was born in Scotland, and in my early years that was important, because Scotland was all around me. When I first moved to Australia it was important, because I was a foreigner in a distant land. But as I became a teenager and in my early adult life it wasn’t that important,

It wasn’t probably till I turned 50 I realised ‘Being Scottish is Important.’

This year as I approached the end of another I stopped (as I do every year) to evaluate the year that was. And, the years that have gone before to bring me to where I am today. As I did the song ‘Scotland Will Flourish’ kept coming into my head, as did the subject of my character.

Romans 12:3 says “Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us”

This verse call us to make an honest assessment of our strengths and our weaknesses in order to learn humility as we uncover our sins and defects, Recovery is about developing a grateful attitude towards God.

Matthew 6:14-15 If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Reminds us of the importance of ‘forgiving others.’ None of us can grow in recovery whilst hanging on to resentments. Let the go! and if you can’t let the go right now take time to talk to God about it and ask Him to give you a forgiving spirit
