Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Look at what I’ve done for you today: I’ve placed in front of you Life and Good, Death and Evil. And I command you today: Love GOD, your God. Walk in his ways. Keep his commandments, regulations, and rules so that you will live, really live, live exuberantly, blessed by GOD, your God, in the land you are about to enter and possess. But I warn you: If you have a change of heart, refuse to listen obediently, and wilfully go off to serve and worship other gods, you will most certainly die. You won’t last long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call Heaven and Earth to witness against you today: I place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Choose life so that you and your children will live. And love GOD, your God, listening obediently to him, firmly embracing him. Oh yes, he is life itself, a long life settled on the soil that GOD, your God, promised to give your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Willingness is a Choice

  1. Good choices have positive long-term effects.
Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin. Proverbs 13:6
  2. Right choices are not always easy choices.
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9
  3. Attractive choices sometimes lead to relapse.
My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them Proverbs 1:10

We made a decision to turn our wills and our lives over
to the care of God.

Brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2

1. We all have great potential for change but we cannot do it under our own power. When we turn our will and life over to the care of God we need to depend on Him to renew our minds and hearts.

You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

2. We are no longer slaves our problems but ‘a chosen people’ to receive God’s healing love so we can share it with others.

This is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Jeremiah 31:33

3. God wants personal relationship with each of us. No matter who we are or what we have done He delights in new ways of showing us His love.

My dear friend, whom I love in the truth. I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. 3 John 1-2

4. Addressing our physical and emotional problems can be the key to restoring both physical and spiritual health.

Matthew 11:27-30

27 “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

  1. Jesus is in charge. {vs 27}
  2. If we want lasting recovery we need to ‘Come to Jesus’ (vs 28)
  3. Our character needs to imitate the character of Jesus (vs 29)
  4. We need to learn from Jesus (vs 29)
  5. If we imitate the character of Jesus and learn from him we will have peace. (vs 28)
