Bible Reading: Ezekiel 1:15-20
I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 11:19
God offers nothing more exciting or far-reaching than His personal offer to ‘put a new spirit within.’ What a great gesture. What a marvellous plan. With all the pain, hurt and unhappiness associated with our past lives why is it so many of us refuse His offer? God takes the initiative and makes the offer. An offer that still stands! So, ‘if it’s going to be – then it’s up to me.’ God makes the offer, we need to accept it.
I must first consider myself unworthy, then count the cost of handover of everything – my past, my guilt, my shame, my foolishness, my failures, my treatment of others – and, MYSELF. I must be willing to be specific in naming my sins, and base my coming to God on one simple prayer “God be merciful to me a sinner.”
This sets in motion the kind of change that is a pre-requisite for wonder-working change that God will invoke when we are honest about our desire of personal experience of His promises.
Part of the process of recovery is exposure of our old spirit. A spirit of rebellion, corruption, contradiction. A spirit that needs to be expelled and this can be painful. Expelling our old spirit may mean facing bad news we have been avoiding, accepting and dealing with panful experiences we have been dreading.
Enjoying the miracle of this new spirit within comes at a cost. The ‘GOOD NEWS’ is God will be there with us, guiding and leading us forward.
You are the God of miracles and I need a miracle. Today Lord give me singleness of heart and put a new spirit within me. Give me a tender, responsive heart right now.
