Today at #NWBC Pastor Peter Botross completed the last installment in the series Discover ~ Develop ~ Disciple. He began the service with the verses Acts 13:1-5. Reading in ‘The Message’ Bible these scriptures say The congregation in Antioch was blessed with a number of prophet-preachers and teachers: Barnabas, Simon, nicknamed Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen, an advisor to the ruler Herod, Saul. One day as they were worshiping God–they were also fasting as they waited for guidance–the Holy Spirit spoke: “Take Barnabas and Saul and commission them for the work I have called them to do.” So they commissioned them. In that circle of intensity and obedience, of fasting and praying, they laid hands on their heads and sent them off. Acts 13:1-3 MSG
Prompted by the Holy Spirit I returned home to investigate what the Bible said about: Intensity ~ Obedience ~ Fasting and Praying. What I am sharing here just scratches the surface. But I believe all are important if we are going to DISCOVER God’s purpose for our lives ~ DEVELOP the character He is calling us to live and DISCIPLE others to do the same. Jesus said Matthew 11:29-30 “Walk with me and work with me–watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” True discipleship comes from “learning the unforced rhythms of grace” of Jesus.
After arriving back home, his disciples cornered Jesus and asked, “Why couldn’t we throw the demon out?” He answered, “There is no way to get rid of this kind of demon except by prayer.” Mark 9:28-29
“Knowing the correct password–saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance–isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience–doing what my Father wills. Matthew 7:21
Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights. Matthew 4:2
Going a little ahead, he fell on his face, praying, “My Father, if there is any way, get me out of this. But please, not what I want. You, what do you want?” Matthew 26:39
“Simply put, if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people and kiss it good-bye, you can’t be my disciple.” Luke 14:33
