Attending Meetings

Recovery is about learning to live life
Living Life is more than just recovery

We were made for community. None of us were created to be loners, even though that’s how many of us ended up. We were born to share with others, care for others and take care of others. That being said I do not believe recovery is all about attending meetings. Yes, we need to be connected to others, we need to be connected in healthy small groups that afford us the opportunity to share our experience, strength, and hope with others. For some of us that means attending meetings every day, for others, it means getting involved in supportive, Bible-based fellowships where we can encourage others and be encouraged by others to learn to live our lives based on the recovery principles found in the word of God. One Size does not fit all.

Romans 12:16  says we should “Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.”

Get along with others and stop thinking we are better than them, Even when they don’t agree with how we do things. Throughout my 30+ years in recovery, I have been told by others “You need to go to meetings. If you are recovering from alcohol you need to go to A.A.” And, believe it or not, I agree with that. In my early recovery A.A. taught me how to stay sober but it is my firm belief it would never have kept me that way. For that, I needed strong, spiritual guidance that I could only discover through God’s Word and a personal daily ongoing relationship with the Holy Spirit. My God is great God, the Creator of all and for Him,I believe recovery from addiction and compulsion is just like recovery from anything else if you put your faith in Him and trust that He can and will help you recover.

A large part of the recovery process is encouraging others. Hebrews 10:25 says “Let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us cheer each other up with words of hope. Let us do it all the more as you see the day coming when Christ will return.”Meeting attendance I believe is an important part of our recovery. Both for our benefit and for the benefit of others who God may have brought to hear what we have to say, but I also believe God has a plan for every one of us and His plan does not include all of us attending meetings every day of our lives. Or not going on holiday somewhere because there is no meeting we can attend.

In my recovery life,I have attended and been part of many, many different recovery fellowships and groups all of which I believe have played important roles in me being who I am today. The one constant in all is knowledge and acceptance we cannot do this on our own. To recover we need Higher Power help. For me there is one true Higher Power, His name is Jesus Christ and He himself said  John 14:26 The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. Walk each day with the Spirit!
