Romans 12:2 Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
In the world we live in may people have prided themselves on being against tradition, the establishment and the status quo. There is nothing new in this. Since the beginning of time humanity has refused to comply. Resisting the set order of things and the rules. Non-conformists have earned themselves a unique place in our history and now many people place them on a pedestal and give high honors as heroes.
Millions of people in this world refuse to consume alcohol or indulge in taking drugs, Yet society at large takes for granted indulgence. It is considered ‘the norm’ A decision to ‘live life recovery’ is outside the norm’ and may be seen as anon-conforming. We may be treated as different, we may receive some ribbing, we may even be considered weaker than those who conform. Recovery can be a battle.
The battle lines drawn. The decision ‘to be different and make a difference’ made. We are joining the ranks of those who defend their rights to oppose slavery, be t alcohol, drugs or some other habit or compulsion.
The Bible challenges us not to “become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God” but to conform to the example of Jesus Christ. Colossians 2:6 ... now just as you trusted Christ to save you, trust him, too, for each day’s problems; live in vital union with him. the is a gripping command, an attainable Goal only through a close relationship with God’s Holy Spirit as we walk daily in our spiritual journey of daily growth.
