Recovery is a lifelong process

AFTER DISCOVERING MY SINFUL HABITS AND ATTITUDES AND CONFESSING THEM,
I AM NOW WILLING TO LET GOD CHANGE ME.

Proverbs 13:18 Those who turn away from their training become poor and ashamed. But those who accept warnings are honoured.

I heard a saying in a recovery meeting years ago that has stuck with me. It is: “If recovery doesn’t stop your using it ill surely mess it up.”

You cannot get to Step Six of a Twelve Step recovery program and go back to how you used to be.

Today at the halfway point I want to encourage you to KEEP MOVING FORWARD. You only fail if you stop trying.

Prayer: Thank You God for the last six months and the changes You have made. Help me to keep going.

Take time today to review three things:

What were you like when you began this process?
All ll have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,    Romans 3:23

Sin is violation of God’s moral law
When outsiders who have never heard of God’s law follow it more or less by instinct, they confirm its truth by their obedience. They show that God’s law is not something alien, imposed on us from without, but woven into the very fabric of our creation. There is something deep within them that echoes God’s yes and no, right and wrong.
 Romans 2:14-15 MSG

Sin is a power that seeks to influence, enslave, and destroy
Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.    Romans 6:12

Sin is a constant battle that goes on inside you
I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.  Romans 2:15

Sin is not only doing the wrong things but failing to do the right things
Whoever knows what is right but doesn’t do it is sinning. James 4:17

The consequence of sin:
Your wrongs have separated you from your God, and your sins have made him hide his face so that he doesn’t hear you. Isaiah 59:2

The payment for sin is death, but the gift that God freely gives is everlasting life found in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

What happened to you since you began the process?
Do not restrain the Holy Spirit; do not despise inspired messages. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-20

Spiritual growth is expanding our knowledge of God.
Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received! 2 Peter 1:3

Spiritual growth is assessing where we have failed God.
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.    John 3:18

Spiritual growth is restoration of our broken relationship with God.
I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.   Psalm 51:17

Spiritual growth is repentance for our sins.
He said, “You can see now how it is written that the Messiah suffers, rises from the dead on the third day, and then a total life-change through the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed in his name to all nations—starting from here.  Luke 24:46-47

How have you changed since you began the recovery process?
Endurance brings God’s approval, and his approval creates hope.   Romans 5:4

We need to trust God with childlike faith
“Unless you turn to God from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.       Matthew 18:3 TLB

Our lives need to change
It’s your life that must change, not your skin!        Matthew 3:8

God’s message is simple and clear
“Turn from your sins . . . turn to God . . . for the Kingdom of Heaven is coming soon.”   Matthew 3:2

With God’s help we will be successful
When he comes back, he will take these dying bodies of ours and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same mighty power that he will use to conquer all else everywhere.  Philippians 3:21
