The Importance of Others
“It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. And if one falls down, the other helps, But if there’s no one to help, tough! Two in a bed warm each other. Alone, you shiver all night. By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Too often people fail in the recovery process because they feel they no longer require the support of a healthy recovery community or group. After many years on the recovery road I can honestly say others on the same road have kept me motivated to ‘keep moving forward.’
I have heard people say “ I don’t need to go to group, I’ve got this” and fail. “God is all I need.” and fail. Now I am not saying “my God can’t supply all my needs.” But He knows and I know we need others. The reason Bill Wilson and Doctor Bob found success is because they discovered the power of supporting one another. And, they realised their dependence on God.
Don’t live life without protection. Find your support community and get involved in it. I am so glad ‘lockdowns’ in Victoria are coming to an end. Not because I don’t like my own company, I do. But because I know as the end I can re enter the recovery community that has become an important part of my spiritual walk with God.
