Welcome to Step Four

Step Four: In order to help me change, I will investigate and record with god’s help – my sinful habits and attitudes.

Recovery is a process that begins with changes in our attitudes and changes in our behaviours.

We begin today with a question:
What Kind of attitudes does God want us to have?

Firstly, God wants us to have an attitude of LOVE

He sent His Son to die of a cross for our sins because HE LOVES US!

In the ‘Message’ it says in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7  “Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,  Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end.

Are we willing to lay aside selfish ambitions and goals?
Does Divine love dwell in our hearts?

God also wants us to have an attitude that DEPENDS ON HIM

Philippians 4:6 in the Living Bible says  “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers.

Imagine never worrying about anything! It seems like an impossibility; we all have worries and problems in our lives. But Paul’s advice is to turn our worries into prayers.

Do you want to worry less?

Then pray more! Whenever you start to worry, stop and pray.

RESENTMENT displeases God.

In Genesis 4:6-7 God asks Cain “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

How do you react when you know have done something wrong?
Do you move accept and correct the mistake?
Or do you look for excuses and avoid correcting it?

Are you continuing live in DENIAL?

Step four is about doing a thorough investigation of our attitudes and defining what we need to do to bring them into God’s way of living our lives.

Next Step four talks about investigating our sinful habits.

  • A habit is a routine of behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously.  Or “Something you continually do without thinking.”

As we grow and mature in life, we develop habits. Some good, some bad. As we work through the process of the ‘Twelve Steps’ our aim is to develop good habits and put an end to our old ones.


Through learning God’s will for our lives and putting it into practice in our daily living.

God has a specific plan for each of us. He wants us to follow Him to fulfill His purpose for us. He cares about what we do – when we do it and how we do it.

Philippians 1:6 says “I am sure that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished.”

His plan for us is good. Jeremiah 29:11 I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a HOPE.


One of the best solutions for dealing with bad habits is to recognize them for what they are and confess them honestly. In Romans 7:15 Pau says I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I can’t. I do what I don’t want to—what I hate.

Remember ‘recovery is a process.’ in which one of the most important ingredients I ‘TIME.’  Breaking a bad habit, you have developed over a long period of time won’t happen overnight.

It is much easier to break bad habits if you replace them with good habits.

Colossians 3:2 encourages us to not “shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.”

Step four is about changing our life perspective. Romans 8:28 in the Living Bible says “We know that all that happens to us is working for our good if we love God and are fitting into his plans.”

Taking time to ’Investigate and record with God’s help our sinful habits and attitudes.’ Is the beginning of learning what in our characters we need to change to live the lives God has prepared for us.
