“You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.”

In order to discover God’s purpose for my life, implement it and to improve my relationship with Him, I will spend time daily in prayer, reading the Bible and meditating on it

God wants us to do what is right always.  His word is our road map to doing the right things in our thoughts, in our behaviours and in life in general. If you are struggling with a decision, a choice or a direction to go in your life take time to pray about it and read what God’s Word says about it before you act.

I used to work with a guy who used to say “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” For some of us that is how we have lived our lives. Doing what we want to do and dealing with whatever consequences followed.

Discussion Starter Question

Have you started looking at things praying about them and waiting for God to respond before you tackle them unprepared?

Stop worrying about how you look.

Matthew 6:27-31Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving.

Stop worrying about how you look and start paying attention to how you are acting and reacting to the things God is doing in and through your life. He has got you!

Matthew 5:16 says “Let your light shine in front of others. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will praise your Father who is in heaven.”

Step 12: Having gone through these steps and discovering the importance of an individual relationship with God through Jesus, I will try to live according to His principles and to lead others to a personal relationship with Him.

*People who know us are watching how we are living, observing the changes in us since entering the recovery process. How we act and react to life can have a big effect on others’ decisions to enter a life of recovery.

ACTION IS THE MAGIC WORD

James 1:22-25 Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

During the time I spent in Alcoholics Anonymous I learned how to talk right in the fellowship. How to say the right things, attend the right meetings and mix with the right people to be seen to be doing well. I wasn’t but anyone you asked about me would tell you “Archie, yeah he’s doing well.”

Recovery has nothing to do with what we say and everything to do with how we act and react.   Whilst in A.A. I read an exceptionally good book called ‘Sobriety and Beyond’ by Father John Doe. Chapter Three was headed ‘Action is the Magic Word’

I believe that book is what set me on the path of looking for God’s inclusion in my recovery.  My own experience of recovery is that without His power there is no recovery

RECOVERY IS NOT ABOUT WHAT WE HEAR

James 1:22 Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear!

James 2:14 Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it?

James 2:12 Talk and act like a person expecting to be judged by the Rule that sets us free

WE FORGET WHAT WE DON’T ACT ON

James 1:23-24 Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

We forget 56% of what we hear in an hour, 66% in 24 hours and 75% after 6 days.

John 5:24 “Anyone who listens to my message and believes in God who sent me has eternal life and will never be damned for his sins.”

2 John 1:7-8There are a lot of smooth-talking charlatans loose human, a flesh-and-blood human being. Give them their true title: Deceiver! Antichrist! And be very careful around them so you don’t lose out on what we’ve worked so diligently in together; I want you to get every reward you have coming to you

WHAT WE ACT ON CHANGES OUR CHARACTER

James 1:25  Whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.

Romans 12:2  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 5:3-5 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady. Then, when that happens, we are able to hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

SUCCESS IN RECOVERY IS ABOUT OUR: Attitude, behaviour and commitment

Experience

Don’t just learn, experience.
Don’t just read, absorb.
Don’t just change, transform.
Don’t just relate, advocate.
Don’t just promise, prove.
Don’t just criticize, encourage.
Don’t just think, ponder.
Don’t just take, give.
Don’t just see, feel.
Don’t just dream, do.
Don’t just hear, listen.
Don’t just talk, act.
Don’t just tell, show.
Don’t just exist, live.”
― Roy T. Bennett

If we don’t stand for something we’ll fall for anything.

John 8:32You will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”

Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves.

They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

Jesus is the One True Higher Power. He is the truth that sets us free. He is the perfect standard of ‘right living’  and He doesn’t give us the freedom to do what we want. As we serve God He does free us to be all God has called us to be.

Matthew 5:8 TLB  “Happy are those whose hearts are pure, for they shall see God.”

If we don’t stand for something we’ll fall for anything. And, if we don’t continue to walk in freedom we will relapse into our old ways of thinking, acting and reacting. We need to act on the parts of God’s plan and purpose we already know as we wait in anticipation for what else He has in store for us,

#2153 Love Makes Action Useful

llr reflection header1 Timothy 1:5 Love comes from a pure heart. It comes from a good sense of what is right and wrong. It comes from faith that is honest and true.

Love is more important than spiritual gifts. Great faith, acts of dedication, miracle working power have little or no effect in our lives without love.  Love makes our actions useful. Spiritual gifts differ in us but love is available to everyone.

1 John 2:7 says “This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before.” God’s love is directed outwards, towards others. It is totally unselfish and it is impossible to practice His kind of love without His help and guidance.

~ Love is a choice. How is God helping you to express it to others?

#2058 Keep Moving Forward

Keep Moving Forward.pngverse for todayThe Bible says in Galatians 6:9 “Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up.”

It is easy to do the right thing when everything appears to be working out the way we expect it to, but not so easy whentimes get tough or God doesn’t act the way we think He should.

thought_for_todayIt is important in the recovery process we learn to take responsibility for ourselves. Realise their a consequences to everything we do. It needs to be clear to us in this new way of living God holds us accountablenfor everything we do say and think. So we need to learn His will for our lives and seek His power to carry it out.

Ecclesiastes 5:2 says  “Don’t shoot off your mouth, or speak before you think. Don’t be too quick to tell God what you think he wants to hear. God’s in charge , not you–the less you speak, the better.”

In an effort to ‘Keep Moving Forward.’  we nned to learn the power of the A.A. slogan ‘THINK! THINK! THINK!’ I don’t know about you but moset of the problems in my life are a reult of acting and reacting on feelings before I take the time to think about the consequences of things.

In Hosea 13:6 God says “I took care of you, took care of all your needs, gave you everything you needed. You were spoiled. You thought you didn’t need me. You forgot me.”

When it comes to ‘Moving Forward’ we need to remember “God’s in charge” He cares about us qnad we need to not get so far ahead of Him we forget where we came from, what He has done and is doing foward and if we could have made it on our own we already would have.

THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!

Look Up, and Be Alert

Colossians 3:2 If you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.

The WORD For Recovery

God’s ways are not like our ways

bible
Psalms 118:22-25
The stone the masons discarded as flawed is now the capstone! This is God’s work. We rub our eyes–we can hardly believe it! This is the very day God acted– let’s celebrate and be festive!  Salvation now, God. Salvation now! Oh yes, God–a free and full life!
