When God Says Go

Luke 17:5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.”

Effective faith in our lives depends on God. It depends on us having total dependence on God and a willingness to do in our lives what He wants us to do.

Over the years of my recovery my life as taken many turns. Not necessarily the way I have wanted it to but always the way God intended it to. There have been times when I have thought to myself and asked God “What are You doing?”

One of the most important character traits we all need to learn in recovery is ’ availability ’ God at some point in your recovery is going to ask you to go where you don’t want to go or don’t understand why you have to go. In those times how you decide will affect the rest of your life and your recovery moving forward.

If God asked you today to move to an unknown destination would you go?

Prayer: Lord help me today to be open to our leading in my life.

Where Is God in Your Walk?

Psalm 121:1 I look up to the mountains. Where does my help come from?

Bible based recovery is not for everyone. God in His wisdom communicates His message to us in many different ways.

For me it began with rehab. Not Bible based, A.A. based. After which I relapsed. My second attempt was a farm rehab run by The Salvation Army. In the first group meeting I attended the were discussing Step Eleven “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God. Praying only for knowledge of His will for me and the power to carry it out.”

On that day my life changed! As I realised my failure to include God in the process of my recovery.

  • Where is God in the process of your recovery?
  • If He is not included will you include Him now?

Show mercy to those who doubt. Jude 1:22

Take a good look at yourselves to see if you are really believers. Test yourselves. Don’t you realize that Christ Jesus is in you? Unless, of course, you fail the test! 2 Corinthians 13:5

We have faith. So we understand that everything was made when God commanded it. That’s why we believe that what we see was not made out of what could be seen. Hebrews 11:3

“Have faith in God,” Jesus said. Mark 11:22

Prayer: God, right now I ask You to be involved in every area of the process of my recovery.

What The Bible Says

The basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. Romans 1:19-20

Knowing that God exists is not enough. People must learn that God is loving and that He sent His Son to demonstrate His love for us.

Romans 5:8 God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

People must be shown how to accept God’s forgiveness of their sins.

Romans 10:14 How can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven’t heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them?

Look for the Similarities not the differences.

Those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, They run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t lag behind. Isaiah 40:31

Believe God can and will help you recover.

When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive–right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s Cross. Colossians 2:13-14

Stop Trying To Be Someone You Are Not

Read: Luke 7:24-28
Focus Verse: Luke 7:28

John the Baptist committed himself to being who God called him to be. A prophet sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus.

As we go through the process of recovery. Learn the Twelve Steps and apply them to our daily lives God will reveal to us each His purpose for our lives. In doing so He promises to be with us always, guiding and strengthening us. Revealing His plan to us as we mature and grow spiritually.

We may think recovery is too difficult for us. That we cannot become the person God is calling us to be. News Flash! We already are. God is not calling us to be anyone other than the people He intended us to be. God in His wisdom created us, knowing we wouldn’t always get it right. Knowing we would make mistakes. Knowing there would be time all of us would intentionally ignore Him. Knowing that He included in each of our unique plans time to grow, times to get to know Him better and times for selfishness, self-seeking ambition,. Times when we will try to be anyone but who He created us to be.

The reality for each of us today is we are exactly where God knew we would be and He is patiently waiting to see what we choose to do next so He can get on with creating His plan in and through our lives.

Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!
Deuteronomy 30:19

Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil. Proverbs 4:25-27

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him. James 1:12

Permitted Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Good for You’

1 Corinthians 6:12 Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.

I started drinking at the age of 15. I became legally old enough to drink at the age of 18. Once I turned 18 people said, “He’s old enough to drink, let him drink.”

Because of my addictive personality mood altering drugs were not good for me, at any age. Yet once I was legal the world was happy for me to live my life as a drunk and so was I.

I never came to recovery to stop drinking. I came to recovery to discover a way to control my drinking. As a result of the belief I would learn to control my drinking I relapsed a number of times.

Through my times on the ‘merry go round’ and the messing up of my life I finally realised ‘my life was a mess’ and, to stop it being a mess I had to stop using alcohol and drugs as a means of ignoring the mess.

  • When did you realize your life was a mess and out of control?
  • How are those closest to you responding to your being in recovery?

It’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him. Romans 12:3

  • Evaluating yourself by the worldly standards of success and achievement can cause you to think too much about your worth in the eyes of others and thus miss your true value in God’s eyes.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:2

  • God has good, pleasing, and perfect plans for us. He wants us to be transformed people with renewed minds, living to honor and obey him

Knowing isn’t everything. If it becomes everything, some people end up as know-it-alls who treat others as know-nothings. Real knowledge isn’t that insensitive. We need to be sensitive to the fact that we’re not all at the same level of understanding in this.
1 Corinthians 8:7

  • Maturity comes from seeking God’s will for our lives and following it.

Prayer: Today God help me to accept abstinence from all mind-altering substances is my only safe path to recovery.

Everyman’s Quota

Keep us alive with three square meals. Matthew 6:11

There is not enough money in this world to satisfy our addictions. Alcohol, drugs and wrong living emptied my pockets. No matter how much I earned, and I had some high paying jobs during my using years.

My family and friends were disappointed in me. I was well known in the pubs I drank at where people were always glad to see me. But not at home. Over the years of using I spent periods of my time living with different members of my immediate family, always with the same result. Disappointment a feeling of unhappiness because something is not as good as you expected or has not happened in the way you hoped.

Entering Bible-based recovery in 1989 I discovered God answering my prayers and my daily bread provided for in wonderful ways. He provided for me in ways I just didn’t understand and can’t explain. What I can explain is I was changed. I no longer had to struggle to move forward in life. He kept opening new doors for me and I kept walking through them to better things in my life.

Philippians 4:19 You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus.

Matthew 6:31-33 What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

Matthew 6:34Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

How Have You Spent Christmas

1 Timothy 1:15 Here’s a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.

We can spend Christmas without knowing how to keep Christmas. Chrismas began in the heart of God with Supreme regard for the heart of mankind. God reaching down just as He did when He sent Jesus to a manger in Bethlehem. Making a heartfelt offer of generous Gift-giving that proposes loving desire to be permitted to come and dwell within us.

Christmas is a ‘Gift from God’ on a Holy day. A gift we can miss in big binges, great parties, bountiful food. over-spending. Know It is not a date on the calendar; it’s a state of mind. One small child prayed, “forgive us our Christmases as we forgive those who Christmas against us.” God is reaching down now! Are we refusing to make room for the Saviour? #Christmas  #Know #Parties

Knowing More about God

When you enter ‘Spiritual Recovery’ and realise God had to be looking after you how could you not want to know more about Him? That’s what happened to me! Realising God cared about me and would help me recover.

The Word For Recovery

“The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this: Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are. Set the world right; Do what’s best— as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You’re in charge! You can do anything you want! You’re ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes. Matthew 6:11

VerseFor Today

I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.” God’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above the earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think. Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don’t go back until they’ve watered the earth, Doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed. They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assignment I gave them. Isaiah 55:11
