“Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this. When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action. And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.” Matthew 18:18-20

There is safety in numbers.

Growing up I was not a very sociable person. Not because I didn’t want to be but because I really never learned growing up how to belong. My parents tried encouraging me to join clubs and events to get me to mix with others but I never really fitted in.

Recovery rescued me. I attended meetings and groups where there were people just like me. People who understood my struggles. Who were patient enough to give me time to discover who I was. Who encouraged me to discover my gifts and abilities and put them to good use.

  • What are your gifts and abilities?

  • How are you using them to help others?

Prayer: Just for today God show me the real me and use me for Your Glory.

Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”Matthew 28:19-20

Be very careful to act exactly as God commands you. Don’t veer off to the right or the left. Deuteronomy 5:32

If I hadn’t come and told them all this in plain language, it wouldn’t be so bad. As it is, they have no excuse. John 15:22

2022 | Day Seven | Verse for Today

Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good; God probes for what is good. Put God in charge of your work, then what you’ve planned will take place. God made everything with a place and purpose; even the wicked are included—but for judgment. God can’t stomach arrogance or pretense; believe me, he’ll put those upstarts in their place. Guilt is banished through love and truth; When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand. Proverbs 16:2-7

Rough enough is good enough! I used to say it all the time. Coming to recovery has changed my approach to the things I do and say. Some of you may have noticed sometimes posts go up on this website with mistakes. And, when I notice them are changed, None of us are perfect, we make mistakes. I had a boss once who said to me “Don’t come into my office with problems. I have heaps of problems. Come in with solutions.” So before taking anything to him I made sure I had thouht of two or three possible solutions and we decided together the way forward.

  • God probes for waht is good and He expects us to look for solutions with which we can work together to move forward.
  • God can’t stomach pretence there is saying in A.A. fake it till you make it. Which I disagree with I don’t think God wants any of us to pretend everything is okay if it isn’t. The Twelve steps encourage us to find our problems – face our problems and – fix our problems with God’s help. We can’t do that by saying everything is okay when it isn’t.
  • Put God in charge guilt is banished through love and truth. To overcome the guilt associated with our character defects, mistakes and problems we need help. Human help we have tried and it hasn’t worked. So we need God’s help and the only way God will hellp is when we put Him in His rightful place of our recovery process.

Change your habits

We humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify
us from all unrighteousness.

In Romans 7:15  Paul says “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
Paul recognized that in his own strength he was incapable of changing his bad habits and in the case of recovery from self did not even know why he did what he did. He knew the difference between right and wrong. He wanted to do what was right but without help outside of himself, it was impossible.

1 John 2:15  says “Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.” The world and all it offers entices us to live according to our selfish desires. There are millions of dollars worth of ads all around us pointing us in that direction.

Giving up things we enjoy is more difficult than giving up things we don’t like so much. But the joy that comes from quitting that which is not good for us is more rewarding than giving up that which pleases us.

Colossians 3:2  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. It is easier to change our bad habits if we have something tangible and good to change them too. In the Bible, there is a lot said about changing our bad habits, about what to change them too, and a God-directed process. Hebrews 10:24-25 says “let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,  not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Recovery meetings are an important part of the process of habit changing. If you are not in one can I encourage you today to find on and attend until the miracle happens. A lot of people in my experience give recovery meetings a GO. Can I suggest today they need more than a go. Recovery is a life-changing process that takes both time and support and the best place I know to find it is with like-minded people, going through the same things as we are. There is a saying in Alcoholics Anonymous that says ‘IT WORKS IF YOU WORK IT!’
Recovery is not just about attendance at meetings you need to get involved, you need to learn to rely on God, and you need to apply whatever He tells you to.

Action Is The Magic Word

Think straight. Awaken to the holiness of life. No more playing fast and loose with resurrection facts. Ignorance of God is a luxury you can’t afford in times like these. Aren’t you embarrassed that you’ve let this kind of thing go on as long as you have? 1 Corinthians 15:34

During the time I spent in Alcoholics Anonymous I learned how to talk right in the fellowship. How to say the right things, attend the right meetings and mix with the right people to be seen to be doing well. I wasn’t but anyone you asked about me would tell you “Archie, yeah he’s doing well.”

Recovery has nothing to do with what we say and everything to do with how we act and react.

Whilst in A.A. I read a very good book called ‘Sobriety and Beyond’ by Father John Doe. A book I am reading again at the moment There is a chapter in the book headed ‘Action is the Magic Word’ I believe that book is what set me on the path of looking for God’s inclusion in my recovery.

My own experience of recovery is that without His power there is no recovery.

How is God working in your recovery?

Ecclesiastes 12:14 Eventually God will bring everything that we do out into the open and judge it according to its hidden intent, whether it’s good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever you do, do well, for in death, where you are going, there is no working or planning, or knowing, or understanding.

Mark 6:31 Jesus said, “Come off by yourselves; let’s take a break and get a little rest.”

Judging Others

“The person who is sinless should throw the first stone.” John 8:7

In order to be accepted into the Bridge Program is South Australia you needed to be assessed by a Detox counselor. When I made a decision to do to the Bridge Program I was staying in The Salvation Army’s William Booth Men’s Hostel. A frequent visitor to detox and well known by the staff and counselor’s.

I remember being assessed and the counselor telling me “sorry you can’t go on the program your attitude is all wrong.” A Salvation Army Officer whom I knew from Perth saw me that day and intervened and that is how I made it to the Bridge Program.

Through personal experience I know that if God has a plan and it doesn’t line up with what people think or believe His plan will always prevail. He will create circumstances in our lives to help us to become all that He wants us to become and do all that He wants us to do.

Have you ever stopped someone achieving their goal because of your bad attitude?

Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Proverbs 4:23

If we had forgotten to pray to our God or made fools of ourselves with store-bought gods, Wouldn’t God have figured this out? We can’t hide things from him.
Psalm 44:20-21

There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears. Philippians 1:6

Prayer God help me today to remain open minded and accept everyone without judgement.

I Believe in You

Matthew 9:28 The blind men went in with him. Jesus said to them, “Do you really believe I can do this?” Matthew 9:27-34

Seeing isn’t always believing. Often when we start attending recovery groups we see what is going on bust we don’t believe it. There is a saying the proof of the pudding is in the eating.” For many of us until we start experiencing changes in our lives because of recovery we just don’t believe it.

This scripture tells of some of the miraculous healing powers of Jesus. In the featured verse Jesus asked two blind men “do you believe I can do this?”

Do you believe Jesus can heal people?

A question we all need to answer as we progress in the process of recovery.

  • Do you believe Jesus cares enough about you to heal you?

#Work #Believe #Progress

Listen to the Voice of God, Keep his commandments and regulations that I’m commanding you today.
Deuteronomy 27:10

Isn’t it obvious that faith and works are yoked partners, that faith expresses itself in works? That the works are “works of faith”?
James 2:22

The health of the apple tells the health of the tree. You must begin with your own life-giving lives.
Luke 6:44

Prayer: Lord help me to believe that You love me and care enough about me to heal me.

What The Bible Says

Now I’m alert to God’s ways; I don’t take God for granted. Slack habits and sloppy work are as bad as vandalism.

All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom! Make sure you don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship–a different kind of “sacrifice”–that takes place in the kitchen and workplace and on the streets. #Habits #Work #Freedom

Remember the Chaos

A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out. Proverbs 25:28

  • Control limits us but it is necessary. An out-of-control life is open to all sorts of attacks by the enemy. Think of self-control as a wall for defense and protection.

Time and time again I have sat in meetings and heard people talk about the ‘insanity’ I want to talk today about the chaos.

The chaos of waking in the morning and having to drink just to go to work. The chaos of working out what stories to make up for being late home because I had stopped at the pub, and sometimes having spent all my wages.

You know addicts are clever people. We can come up with excuses in an instant, justify the worst behavior without batting an eye-lid.

  • Consider the chaos of your using and how you managed it.
  • Are you glad the chaos has stopped?

    #Chaos #Time #Work

God doesn’t stir us up into confusion; he brings us into harmony. 1 Corinthians 14:33

I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left–feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught. John 14:27

Nothing, you see, is impossible with God.”Luke 1:37

Prayer: God let me put some order into my chaos today.

What The Bible Says

God says “I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out–plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.” That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good. It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, I can’t impress this on you too strongly. God is looking over your shoulder. Christ himself is the Judge, with the final say on everyone, living and dead. He is about to break into the open with his rule, so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch. Challenge, warn, and urge your people. Don’t ever quit. Just keep it simple. You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching but will fill up on spiritual junk food–catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you–keep your eye on what you’re doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God’s servant. #Living #Love #Work #Good
