John 3:7-8 “Don’t be so surprised when I tell you that you have to be ‘born from above’-out of this world, so to speak. You know well enough how the wind blows this way and that. You hear it rustling through the trees, but you have no idea where it comes from or where it’s headed next. That’s the way it is with everyone ‘born from above’ by the wind of God, the Spirit of God.”
Being ‘born from above’ is the beginning of a new way of living ‘God’s Way’ The first step in the process of Spiritual growth. When we begin the process of Bible-based recovery we can find it difficult looking back at our life to accept the concept of ‘God who cares about me.’
When we honestly look at our past, however, all of us can see things in our lives in which we have placed our faith. Yet when faced with the option of a loving, caring God we can wrestle with the thought of putting our faith Him.
Spiritual Rebirth is a God-given gift that we have no control over. We get it through putting our faith in Jesus ability to help us change our character from the inside out. Romans 8:16 tells us when we put our faith in Him ‘God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who He is, and we know who we are’
Faith is a relationship with the Holy Spirit in which we learn who we really are and what we need to do to become the people God calls us to be. Romans 10:17 says “Before you trust, you have to listen.” When we enter Bible-based recovery we want God to listen to us and to ‘grant us serenity’ on our terms. We give little or no thought to actually taking the time to listen when He speaks to us and acting on it. We also need to learn in the process of recovery to listen to others who walk the recovery road with us, some of whom have walked it far longer, from a greater distance than we have. No one ends up in our path in recovery by mistake. God’s got this!
2 Corinthians 5:7 says “We walk by faith, not by sight.” We can’t see what is ahead of us but God can and if we put our faith in Him, talk to Him, listen to Him and obey His guidance on a daily basis we cannot fail in the recovery process.
