Love God and Love Others

Matthew 22:34-40 When the Pharisees heard how He had bested the Sadducees, they gathered their forces for an assault. One of their religion scholars spoke for them, posing a question they hoped would show him up: “Teacher, which command in God’s Law is the most important?” Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”

The Pharisees often tried to distinguish the more important from the less important. When challenged Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:5 Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love Him with all you’ve got! and Leviticus 19:18 “Don’t seek revenge or carry a grudge against any of your people. “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

LOVING GOD IS THE MOST IMPORTANT COMMAND
Jesus said, “The first in importance is, ‘Listen, Israel: The Lord your God is one; so love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.’ Mark 12:29-30

LOVING OTHERS IS JUST AS IMPORTANT
‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ There is no other commandment that ranks with these.”  Mark 12:31

When we love God and care for others as much as we care for ourselves, we fulfill the intent of the Ten Commandments. These two commandments summarize all God’s laws. We need to let them rule our thoughts, actions, behaviors, and commitment.

Demonstrating a love for God and love for others in our lives is a true indication of our spiritual growth and transformation.
